Server 2012 Essentials Migration Notes

2 major issues really fouled me up on my last Server 2012 Essentials migration (from Server 2008):

First, while running the Microsoft Baseline Configuration Analyzer, I kept running into an error with DNS Zone 5.

Why the error is called DNS Zone 5 is beyond me, but I finally found some notes that said to delete the _msdcs.domain.local zone, and recreate it. See this link among others:

Second, while trying to run the Windows Server 2012 Essentials Migration Preparation Tool (on my Server 2008 source box), I kept running into this error:

“You must be a member of the Domain Admins, Schema Admins, and Enterprise Admins groups”.

What it REALLY means to say (if you dig into the logs) is “You must be a member of the Domain Admins, Schema Admins, and Enterprise Admins groups, and have Domain Users as your Primary Group”.

Why Domain Users has to be your primary group is anyone’s guess, but that’s a quick fix that took me a while to track down.

Hope that saves some people some trouble.
